Beyond Their Reach

"Beyond Their Reach" is my first major oil painting in Western Art, a piece I devoted an immense amount of time to, knowing it could shape my visual identity in the genre.

Coming from the world of comics (Bande Dessinée in French), I spent years illustrating Western stories—gunfights, train heists, and high-speed chases on horseback. As I began this painting, those influences resurfaced naturally. I wanted to create a scene that felt cinematic and dynamic, with a strong sense of movement and tension.

I chose a high vantage point to emphasize the scale of the train and make it the clear focal point. The robbers in pursuit are suddenly forced to a halt—the canyon standing between them and their prize. If you look closely, you’ll notice the train conductor peering out of the cabin, realizing he’s escaped at the last possible moment.

On a deeper level, this painting represents more than just a dramatic chase. The train can be seen as a metaphor for my own journey into Western Art—crossing a bridge into a new world, leaving behind past subjects while bringing with me the energy, ideas, and passion that have always fueled my work.

"Beyond Their Reach" was created for my first exhibition at Medicine Man Gallery, Masters of Drawing, marking the beginning of my path in the Western art world.
