ONLINE MASTERCLASS

A visually informative digital composition showcasing key artistic principles for Mathieu Nozieres' Masterclass. The image includes a variety of studies: a classical painting broken down into grayscale values, a sphere demonstrating light and shadow, a 3D color model, and a Rembrandt self-portrait in both color and monochrome. Color palettes and tonal analysis are also featured, emphasizing a structured approach to mastering composition, lighting, and value in painting.

Focused on Theory, Built for Artists

These online masterclasses are designed for artists who want to understand painting on a deeper structural level.

Rather than focusing purely on rendering or technique, the sessions explore the underlying principles that make images hold together: composition, value organization, hierarchy, edges, rhythm, color relationships, and visual clarity.

The goal is not simply to copy reference more accurately, but to understand how to build stronger and more intentional images.

Learning to Think Structurally

Many paintings fail not because of technique, but because the structure underneath the image is unclear.

A drawing can be accurate, the rendering polished, and the colors controlled, yet the painting still struggles to communicate.

These sessions focus on the decisions that happen before rendering:

  • Organizing relationships

  • Directing the eye

  • Simplifying value structures

  • Creating hierarchy

  • Controlling readability

The objective is to help artists move beyond guesswork and gain more control over their visual language.

Through his insightful critiques of my paintings, reviews of whatmakes master artists’ work compelling, guidance on technique, values, and composition, encouragement to create more unique, impactful artworks, and tips for pitching to galleries, I feel I have takena big leap forward as an artist. His continued guidance is animmeasurable help and I am most grateful to have him as my mentor."

"As a self-taught hobby watercolorist, I have become Mathieu's studentwith the fuzzy idea of improving my painting skills. Surely, there are nosilver bullets or magic pills in arts, but still, following his classes had apretty strong effect! :) :)

Besides being a very pleasant company, Mathieu is extremelyprofessional. His courses are very well prepared, and most importantly, always tailored to my needs (needs I am not even aware of!).

He gives structure and logic to things that were initially only gutfeelings for me. He demonstrates difficult theoretical concepts bymodifying digitally my own paintings, facilitating my understandingand increasing my capacity to act appropriately on my future artworks.

With his guidance, and obviously a lot of personal work :), I was able toquickly step-up my painting qualities across many modalities (colours, values, composition, etc.)."

"Each of the courses provided by Mathieu turned out to be anenriching experience from which I came out motivated and inspired.

He knows how to be available and to be benevolent while subtlystimulating the desire to progress. His approach is based on a formulathat skilfully combines pedagogy, humor and professional rigor whenhe sheds light on the choice of material, technique, composition,or the pangs of starting an artistic career...

Although his clothing tastes are subject to caution, I have a fullconfidence in his qualities as an artist and teacher."

"I have been taking painting classes as a hobby for four years.
I had the chance to attend Mathieu Nozière’s painting classes during this special year of COVID, both in person and remotely.

Thanks to his teaching approach, Mathieu helped me overcome several important milestones this year, and my work has significantly improved.

He finally made me understand and master fundamental concepts very clearly, using demonstrations and precise explanations. These include values, light, saturation, and choosing the right subject to paint. These were elements I had been taught before, but they remained unclear in my mind. He made everything very explicit and simple.

He is an excellent teacher, and his classes and workshops are extremely well-structured:

Clear and precise descriptions and explanations
Examples and numerous references from both classical and modern painting
Practical workshops and exercises during the courses, allowing for rapid progress
A highly effective remote learning setup (during COVID), with videos, live corrections on submitted artworks via photos, etc.
References to interesting videos (YouTube, etc.) for specific technical aspects

I therefore highly recommend attending one of his classes to anyone who wants to improve their technical skills.
His workshops on black and white or light are truly foundational, and they work very well remotely, thanks to his well-organized technical setup.
Since he is also very friendly, the classes take place in a great atmosphere."
