Beyond Their Reach (Drawing)

"Beyond Their Reach" is not just an oil painting—it also exists as a large-scale drawing, created specifically for the Masters of Drawing exhibition at Medicine Man Gallery. This piece was rendered in ink and pencil on paper, exploring the same dramatic composition in a different medium.
The Story Behind the "Beyond Their Reach" Diptych:
Coming from the world of comics (Bande Dessinée in French), I spent years illustrating Western stories—gunfights, train heists, and high-speed chases on horseback. As I began this painting, those influences resurfaced naturally. I wanted to create a scene that felt cinematic and dynamic, with a strong sense of movement and tension.

I chose a high vantage point to emphasize the scale of the train and make it the clear focal point. The robbers in pursuit are suddenly forced to a halt—the canyon standing between them and their prize. If you look closely, you’ll notice the train conductor peering out of the cabin, realizing he’s escaped at the last possible moment.

On a deeper level, this painting represents more than just a dramatic chase. The train can be seen as a metaphor for my own journey into Western Art—crossing a bridge into a new world, leaving behind past subjects while bringing with me the energy, ideas, and passion that have always fueled my work.

The drawing is framed in a high-end, hand-carved, gold-leafed frame by Mayen Olson (CA), adding a refined and timeless presentation to the piece.
